Meet high school student Eloise Wang teaching an immigrant student from New Zealand!

"I joined Engaging English during the summer of 2025. At that time, I was was anxious about finding a suitable CAS project for my IB. Luckily, I came across Engaging English and was given the opportunity to teach Chinese immigrant children. However, the teaching journey wasn’t what I had imagined, especially with the time zone differences. On top of that, I was on holiday and attending summer school, so it felt almost impossible to squeeze in time. Despite that, the Engaging English team was very patient and helped guide me.
I was assigned 2 immigrant students from New Zealand. In my first lesson, I decided to teach them how to formally introduce themselves. Since it was our first lesson, I thought introductions were the best way to get to know each other. We played a quick icebreaker game, then practiced English with Chinese explanations. We had a wonderful 45 minutes of chatting and learning!
In the following lessons, after getting a grasp of their levels, we all agreed to focus on debate, which is connected to my past debate experiences. From learning prepositions to summarizing texts, we worked step by step.
Overall, Engaging English provides flexibility for tutors and amazing opportunity to gaining social skills while earning service hours and helping immigrant kids who are struggling."
